This was one of many mandalas created after my trip to Egypt with my husband in 1999. This one was inspired by King Tut’s falcon amulet. The design reminds me of the rising phoenix, a transformation from out of the ashes.
This mandala was inspired by the decorative lid of a large alabaster box belonging to King Tut. I loved the multiple rows of detailed patterns which all lent itself even better in a circular mandala form.
Prior to 2005 I had created to King Tut inspired mandalas. By 2005 I wanted to create another one. This one is my interpretation of a amulet/necklace worn by King Tut and on display at the Cairo Museum. The center scarab in this case represents Tut being carried off to the afterlife in a boat. The cobras and other scarabs are there to protect him on his journey.
