“Hidden in Plain View”
For this mandala design, I created one full-color version using color pencils

On occasion I participate in EBSQ’s monthly online art shows (of which I’m a juried member). The theme for the February 2009 show was: “One Word Concept: Hidden“. The idea “hidden in plain view” came to mind. I love playing around with words. I outlined the “hidden” word and then randomly doodled large wavy lines around and through it.
The overall painting was done with five prismacolor pencils: canary yellow, scarlet lake, true blue, diox. purple and black cherry. Each section was outlined with coordinating prismacolor verithin pencils. The whole painting was done on the back of a round matte cut-out.
When I have this painting on display at shows, it tends to be the crowd favorite.
The Message
“Hidden in Plain View” emphasizes the concept: actions speak louder than words.
Instead of preaching to everyone about how they should live or be, we are being asked to take a good look at our own actions first. For instance…
- If we want people to be kinder, how kind are we?
Action: Be kind to ourselves and others - If we want people to be more peaceful, how peaceful are we?
Action: Be at peace with ourselves and others - If we want people to be more loving, how loving are we?
Action: Be loving to ourselves and others - If we want to be heard, how well do we listen?
Action: Listen to others as well as to our own inner guidance - If we want to be seen for who we really are, how well do we see others?
Action: See ourselves and others as we all really are; looking past the facades - If we want to be understood, how understanding are we?
Action: Be understanding of ourselves and of others - If we want people to be considerate, how considerate are we?
Action: Be considerate of ourselves and others - If we want the world to slow down, how ofter do we slow down?
Action: Slow down! - If we want others to be joyful, how joyful are we?
Action: Be joyful - If we want others to be more tolerant, how tolerant are we?
Action: Be tolerant of ourselves and of others - If we want others to be more accepting, how accepting are we?
Action: Be accepting of ourselves and of others - If we want to be appreciated, how well do we appreciate others?
Action: Appreciate everyone and everything around us, including and especially ourselves - and so on…
From a different perspective:
- If we want others to stop judging us, notice where in our lives we are negatively judging ourselves and others
Action: Stop judging…acknowledge what is - If we want others to stop criticizing us, notice where in our lives we are overly critical
Action: Stop criticizing…appreciate what is - If we want others to stop treating us or others badly, notice where in our lives we poorly treat ourselves and others
Action: Stop doing it…cut us all some slack - and so on…
We are being asked to lead by example in a healthy, positive. On a conscious level, some will get, it plain as day, some will resist it, some will ignore it, and still others will walk away. On an energetic level, though, everyone gets the message.
“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi
While simple in concept, like Gandhi, this mandala challenges us to look within for what we want to experience in our outer world. It also reminds us of our interconnectedness and that most of what we see and hear is just a reflection of our inner world.
So…are we up for the challenge? What actions do we wish to put forth in plain view? What’s our truth?
At the same time, what actions do others put forth to us in plain view? Do their actions match their words? What’s their truth?
Practice being and seeing what is hidden in plain view.
