“Dreamcatcher”
“Let me make my wishes, hopes, and dreams a reality”
For this mandala design, I created one full-color version using markers

I’ve always been fascinated by dreamcatchers…it may have something to do with the fact that they form a circle. Years ago, a friend gave me a red-tailed hawk feather. I used it as my model for this dreamcatcher-like mandala.
The Message
Our dreams come from within, from a place beyond our normal day-to-day lives. This mandala refers to dreams as our inner drive, our passion to go above and beyond to make them happen. They are more than just goals, they are the people we want to be, the places we hope to go, the things we wish to accomplish.
We all have them. Some of us make them happen. Others of us falter, allowing ourselves to be weighed down by the opinions of others, or worse by our own doubts and fears.
This mandala asks us to do two things regarding our dreams:
- Examine the motive behind our dream. Is our dream coming from a place of truth within us…a place that wants to help others using our gifts/talents for the greater good of all? Or is our dream coming from the place of our ego? An example of this would be those who want to be the first female president of the United States. Do they really want to be president or do they just want the bragging rights? We must honestly examine our motives, the source of our inner drive by asking ourselves: is this truly what we want?
- Let go of the doubts and fears that prevent us from achieving our dreams. Marianne Williamson offers these inspiring words, giving us a better perspective on fear:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.” – Marianne Williamson…Read the full quote on Mairanne’s Web Site.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I have a dream” speech epitomizes the idea of a dream coming from a place of truth. It was his inner drive and passion that inspired him and others to go above and beyond, in order to do what could be done to make his dream a reality…and for the greater good of all.
While it may seem daunting to just go full out with making our dreams a reality, we can certainly find ways to convert them into achievable steps that can be done easily and on a regular basis. For example, to become a well-paid, jazz guitarist can start out as just learning how to play three basic chords without having to look at the fret board. With defining daily practice and striving to learn new techniques as steps along the way, skills will improve and over time the dream can be made real.
Putting it simply, Dreamcatcher reminds us to:
Keep the dream alive while focusing on what can be done today to make our wishes, hopes and dreams a reality, letting go of any doubts or fears that may hinder us along the way.
